Introducing Myself - The Professional Practice Ltd

I’ve been a full-time project management trainer for just over three years, and I love what I do. No two weeks are ever the same. I get to work with people from a wide range of industries, backgrounds, and levels of experience. I get real satisfaction from seeing learners grow in confidence, achieve their certifications, and take practical skills back into their working lives.

What has always mattered most to me is not just helping people pass an exam, but helping them understand the content. Seeing those moments when something just clicks, when a concept suddenly makes sense, that is one of the most rewarding parts of being a trainer. 

AI continues to change the training industry. I believe it is more important than ever to recognise the value of experienced, human-led learning. I’m not denying that technology can enhance training, but it cannot replace the passion, empathy, and adaptability that an experienced and skilled trainer brings to a classroom.  

In January, following organisational changes within the company I was working with, I took the opportunity to launch into freelance work and continue delivering my training independently, hence the creation of The Professional Practice Ltd.  

My Core Values 

I firmly believe that people are at the heart of projects and, more importantly, at the heart of businesses. While tools, methodologies, and frameworks are essential, they are only ever as effective as the people using them. Not to sound too much like David Brent, but a company’s best asset truly is its people!  

We live in a time where new technology is often viewed as a replacement for human capability. But I’ve been reflecting...  

The typewriter was once thought of as the end of handwriting, just as the PC was expected to replace the typewriter, and then the laptop to replace the desktop. Yet even today, people still find themselves relying on simple pen and paper. Not because technology failed, but because real thinking, creativity, and human instinct still matter.  

This is the angle I bring into every training session I deliver. I aim to remind learners that frameworks are there to support professional judgement, not replace it, and that their brain is the best tool in the box.   

What Makes My Training Different? 

My training is intentionally humanistic. I use real-world examples throughout my sessions, linking to practical scenarios that learners can recognise in their own workplaces, or even at home. Delegates often hear my project analogies such as the great roast dinner, packing a holiday suitcase, or planning my best friend’s wedding. An inspirational teacher of mine when growing up used to say “Keep it simple, stupid,” and I suppose that stuck with me!  

Of course, my examples are always linked back to the theory, and all learning is fully aligned with the relevant syllabus and exam requirements. But I ask, why can’t training be fun!?  

Passing an exam is only part of the journey. While it is the primary focus of any training course, true professional competence comes from understanding how, when and why to apply a method properly. Anyone can memorise a textbook with enough time, but developing confidence in real-world application of that content requires meaningful conversations, deeper engagement and ultimately better training.  

My role as a freelance trainer is to bring just that. I want to help learners move from theoretical knowledge to practical understanding, without abandoning the frameworks themselves.  

 Why “The Professional Practice”? 

The name The Professional Practice reflects exactly what I stand for. I see it as a place...  

A place where high standards are maintained, respect is given to everyone and everything, and continuous learning is instinctive. It is a safe and open learning environment where questions are encouraged, discussion is welcomed, and learners feel comfortable exploring new ideas.  

Project management is not something that was created in a textbook. It is something that was practised, refined, and developed, just like my training style. Everything I do as a trainer is central to the identity of this business. It’s about being professional, being human, and above all, being myself.  

Looking Ahead 

I have exciting ideas for the future, and I hope that this venture continues to grow over time. However, my main focus remains simple: delivering high-quality training.  

Throughout my career, I have delivered training in APM, PRINCE2, and IPMA, and that is exactly what I am going to continue doing. I don’t intend to scale rapidly or rush anything. I want to build trusting, long-term relationships with organisations and ATOs who value the learning experience and want to invest in people. I want to work with people who give their staff opportunities for growth and care about the brilliant outcomes effective training can have for them.

I am not a training company, nor am I an Accredited Training Organisation myself. I have set up as a freelance trainer to give me a wide reach. I want to continue to work with vast numbers of people from all walks of life.
